Levi Fitzgerald (1893-1957) taught at St. Vincent’s for 37 years and was one of the more influential and energetic priests of the period.
His work left a lasting impression upon the school and on generations of students who went through their studies during his leadership. In particular, his tremendous commitment to working with the young boys of the school was an inspiration to his peers, as well as to parents of former students.
Levi was born in New York City on 9 June 1893. He was the son of J.J. and Catharine Fitzgerald. He had two siblings: a brother, Joseph, and a sister, Agnes.
In 1917 he entered the novitiate of the Congregation of the Precious Blood in the Bronx.
He was ordained a priest on 31 August 1921.
Levi was the associate principal of Saint Vincent’s School, beginning in 1920, and the principal of the School from 1938 to 1941. He was a member of the governing bodies of St. Vincent’s for the period 1941 to 1952. He received the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity from the College of the Holy Cross in 1933 and Doctor of Laws from St. Bonaventure University in 1937.
He died in New York City on 21 April 1957.
Leopold Edelmann, in his book about St. Vincent’s during the 1950’s (History of St. Vincent’s School: The Levines and St. Vincent’s, 1949-1959), said of Father Fitzgerald, “He was a dynamic, indefatigable priest, who during his years at the helm of the school, gave up both his own and the school’s wealth of talent and resources. He was a beloved man, loved by the students and parents alike, a man of the people.”
During Father Levi’s lifetime, St. Vincent’s School’s reputation as a premier catholic school was as strong as its talented faculty and devoted students.
