In the present study, we report a mechanism of disease resistance against pathogens in transgenic tobacco plants expressing Aut7, a novel autoinhibitory protein in Arabidopsis. Aut7 localized in the nucleus and cytosol in plant cells; however, in response to the infection of pathogen, it translocated to the plasma membrane and interacted with the membrane-bound receptor kinase (RK) to activate autophagy. Transgenic tobacco plants overexpressing Aut7 were more resistant than non-transgenic control plants to bacterial pathogens Pseudomonas syringae, Alternaria solani and Xanthomonas oryzae. Furthermore, we observed that plant autophagy flux was increased after the infection of these pathogens, which was correlated with the protein level of the autophagy-related protein 16 (ATG16) and ATG5.
