We performed mutational analysis of the smoothelin gene in patients with Marfan syndrome. We sequenced the DNA of this gene in 22 patients with Marfan syndrome. Overall, we identified nine missense mutations, four deletions, and two patients were homozygous for a splice-site mutation and one patient was homozygous for a deletion. No novel mutations or polymorphisms were identified. This is the first report of a causative mutation in Marfan syndrome.Analysis of the impact of the treatment of insulin resistance on the cardiovascular risk.
Cardiovascular events have been consistently shown to be more frequent in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus than in the general population. Insulin resistance is one of the major determinants of cardiovascular risk. Long-term glycemic control can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by its beneficial effect on insulin resistance. Hyperinsulinemia, however, and the consequent increase of the cardiovascular risk have been demonstrated in patients with Type 2 diabetes after monotherapy with sulphonylurea. In normoglycemia, glucose fluxes can be increased by the treatment of insulin resistance. This observation suggests that on cardiovascular risk in patients with Type 2 diabetes, the treatment of insulin resistance may have an additional beneficial effect. The metabolic background of such beneficial effect, however, remains still to be defined.Popular

Innovative Battery Manufacturer Introduces Cheaper But More Efficient Chemistry
by Sam Savage
Sometimes, research and development starts in unexpected places. American Siemens Energy is now working with Kansai Electric Power and other energy suppliers to create a more energy efficient lithium-ion battery chemistry. Because it requires a lower amount of energy to manufacture, it costs less to install and can

Leaders have been considering their legal options after an electoral commission ruled that former Leave.EU director Arron Banks could not be named official Brexit campaign director because, in the commission’s view, this would amount to misleading voters.
The Electoral Commission says, on the basis of the information currently before it, that there is not sufficient reason to conclude that the national leave campaign had significant misrepresentation in its conduct of the referendum campaign.
But the commission said it was not in a position to be asked to consider further changes.
The Electoral Commission also rejected a request from Nigel Farage for it to investigate whether Leave.EU was funded by Russian money.
The Electoral Commission said it would not be investigating Leave.EU for supposed funding from Russia.
A group, Leave.EU Grassroots, had raised suspicions that payments totalling £425,000 were made from a Russian oligarch to the Brexit campaign group.
Leave.EU Grassroots has accused Moscow of seeking to “entrench its hold” over politics in the UK by funding the campaign for the UK to leave the European Union.
The Electoral Commission has come under increasing pressure to start a full inquiry into Brexit-related matters.
Former Labour MP Chris Bryant said that, when it comes to his own organisation, Labour has no option but to vote against the conclusions of the Electoral Commission, and to take their complaint to the supreme court.
Bryant told BBC Newsnight: “We’re going to fight this, and we’re going to win this.”
Labour has been pointing to evidence suggesting that, contrary to the commission’s conclusions, Leave.EU was a Leave.EU campaign.
Bryant said: “I have not seen anything yet that would require changes to be made, or amendments made, or any sort of handover of power or anything like that. There’s nothing on the surface that I can see that requires people to be taken to court.”
He added: “If the Electoral Commission have come to these conclusions, they have
